The Downers Grove North football team will look to build on its back-to-back upsets Saturday as it hosts Benet Academy for the IHSA Class 7A quarterfinals. After losing their last three regular-season games to finish sixth in the West Suburban Silver Conference, the Trojans (7-4) have defied all odds in their 2012 playoff run. They knocked out top-seeded Batavia 38-26 in Round 1, and beat Thornton 29-13 last week in Round 2. Coming off 1-8, 2-7 and 2-7 seasons, Downers Grove North will again be the underdog as it hosts Benet (10-1) for quarterfinal play. The Hornets won their second sectional volleyball title in school history.
The Hinsdale South girls volleyball team has flown under the radar all season. Not anymore. The Hornets upset Benet in a thriller for the ages Thursday night, outlasting the top-seeded Redwings 29-31, 28-26, 30-28 in a 90-minute marathon to win the Class 4A Romeoville Sectional championship. It is just the second sectional title in school history for Hinsdale South, which will play either Minooka or Edwardsville in Saturday's Normal West Supersectional. "We just went in there with our hearts and with passion, and I think that's the real reason we won," sophomore outside hitter Jessica Brezwyn said. "We went in there confident, and it just showed."
