Hinsdale Central exited the playoffs with an upset loss, while Hinsdale South finished 7-19, but both teams stayed upbeat about their 2013 seasons.
Despite enduring some respective disappointments as their seasons drew to a close, both the Hinsdale Central Red Devils and the Hinsdale South Hornets boys basketball coaches struck an upbeat tone about their year, the Suburban Life reports. Hinsdale Central (18-7) were upset by 12-seed Geneva last Thursday, 55-49, and forced to leave the playoffs earlier than expected, but can fall back on a 12-win streak to start the calendar year and their first West Suburban Silver title since 2000, the paper said. "Our senior group was special," coach Nick Latorre said of the nine departing seniors. "I think the overall focus of our program is built on hard work, discipline and unselfishness, and I think those are the three things they have brought …

Second-year head coach Nick Latorre's Hinsdale Central team won 12 more games this season than it did in his first year.
The Hinsdale Central boys basketball team’s 17-10 record in 2011-12 looks a lot different than its 2010-11 record of 5-19, but second-year head coach Nick Latorre said this season’s success was due in part to the struggles of last season, when key players were able to get valuable experience. “I think that last year’s group set the foundation for this year,” Latorre said. Senior Tom Garvin was one of those key players this season, and even after Hinsdale Central’s season-ending regional championship loss to Downers South on March 2, he couldn't help but look back fondly on his first winning season as a Red Devil. “It was a blast, man,” said Garvin, who averaged 13.4 points per game this season and led the team in rebounding with 5.9 per …

After winning their home regional, Downers South will move on to the East Aurora Sectional next week.
Three Downers South seniors scored in double-digits as the Mustangs, behind a strong second-half shooting performance, beat Hinsdale Central 64-51 Friday night in the Downers South Boys Basketball Regional Championship. In their final home game as Mustangs, Kevin Honn scored 20 points, Jamall Millison tallied 17, and Jerron Wilbut chipped in 12 for Downers South (22-5). Senior center Greg Garro had nine points and nine rebounds. Downers South head coach Jay Baum commended his upperclassmen after the win. “To their credit, they’ve gotten better as the year’s gone on,” Baum said. Hinsdale Central (17-10) took a 22-14 lead mid-way through the second quarter before the Mustangs got hot. Downers South finished the second quarter on a 10-2 run …

Visiting Pirates remain unbeaten as late rally by Mustangs falls short.
Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team beat Proviso East twice last season en route to winning the West Suburban Conference Gold Division championship. On Thursday, Proviso East exacted its revenge. The unbeaten Pirates demonstrated why they are ranked No. 2 in the Chicago area, leading from wire-to-wire in their 78-70 victory in Downers Grove. Proviso East (15-0, 5-0) raced out to a 12-2 lead, flustering the Mustangs with a full-court press and turning the game into a track meet in the early going. The visitors eventually led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter before Downers South (13-3, 4-1) made the score respectable in the closing minutes. So what was the difference from last year, when the Mustangs swept the season …

Sophomore point guard keys Downers South's blowout of Willowbrook.
Danny Spinuzza is only eight games into his varsity basketball career, but Downers Grove South coach Jay Baum has already paid him a huge compliment. "He’s an amazing point guard,” Baum said of the 5-10 sophomore. “I think he’s the next coming of Bryan Mullins. He’s got a long way to go before he’s Bryan, but he reminds me of him.” Mullins was the best point guard in school history, an All-Stater who went on to star at Southern Illinois and now plays pro ball in France. What prompted the comparison? Spinuzza’s steady play in the early going raised eyebrows, especially the fact that he’s gotten steadily better. Spinuzza had eight points, eight assists, four steals and three offensive rebounds to spark the Mustangs to an 86-41 demolition of …
