Author Jodee Blanco presented a daylong event Tuesday at District 63 on the impact of bullying.
The humiliations author Jodee Blanco endured as a child still haunt her. One time, she found her locker smeared with garbage after she intervened when bullies flicked dirt into the eyes of a disabled child. During another incident, she arrived at school to find her favorite pair of shoes, which she kept in her locker, submerged in a toilet, accompanied by the note, “Everybody hates you, freak.” “Kids think it’s just joking around,” she said. “But they’re damaging each other for life." Blanco emerged from her agonizing childhood to become a successful Hollywood publicist. But after the Columbine shootings in 1999, she said she realized the power her story could have to help others. The Orland and Palos Park native and author of two books …

Advocate Jodee Blanco will speak with students, parents and teachers on Feb. 8.

Cass Junior High Principal Paul Bleuher said that fortunately his school has not yet experienced any major bullying tragedies such as the ones that dominate morning talk shows. But in isolated incidents, he’s seen the way bullying is evolving and the devastating effect it can have on embattled kids. “It’s really a challenge because the lines are blurred with what happens …

Hinsdale South students perform a skit to show what it feels like to be the new kid in school during National Bullying Awareness Week.
Drew Mikusca delivers one last line before wrapping up a skit he and fellow students are performing in health class. "Will you pick people up when they're down? It's your choice." Mikusca was joined earlier this week by Lyann Pimentel, Adrian Melendez, Natalie Worden, Akvile Zakarauskaite and Megan Javier. The group performed a skit at Hinsdale South that highlights the type of bullying the new kid in school may experience. The skit was one of a week's worth of activities that were part of School District 86's districtwideinitiative to identify, prevent and address bullying. The district's plans coincide with its recognition of National Bullying Awareness Week, which runs through Friday. "Hinsdale District 86 strongly believes that a …

At last night's board meeting, Hinsdale Township High School District 86 approved an increase in its tax levy for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The board also shared student successes stories.
Updated: Nov. 18 Residents within the boundaries of Hinsdale Township High School District 86 will see an increase in the amount of taxes they owe the district next year. At Monday's District 86 Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously approved the Tentative 2010 Real Estate Property Tax Levy which will increase the district's tax levy by about 4 percent over the 2009 Tax Extention.
