City of Darien, Chase Bank Will Close on Property Sale Friday

Deal for parcel at 75th Street and Cass Avenue has been in the works since February 2011.

The City of Darien is scheduled to close Friday on the sale of a parcel of property at 75th Street and Cass Avenue to Chase Bank.  The city council approved the $1.95 million deal last November. Since the vacant property was the former site of a gas station, environmental testing was required before construction of the bank could begin.  According to Assistant City Administrator Scott Coren, the property is “nearly finished with an environmental remediation project.” He added that the parcel has already acquired a “No Further Remediation” letter from the Environmental Protection Agency. Coren said that as part of the project, an access road will be constructed connecting the parcel to the strip mall and property at Plainfield Road and Cass…

City Officials Offer Glimpse into Downtown Development’s New Chapter

The city hopes to bring a development similar to the one at 75th and Lyman to the center of Darien.

Picture the strip of storefronts on 75th Street just west of Lyman Avenue — the one with Panda Express, Caribou Coffee, an AT&T store and other retail businesses.  Now envision two of those three buildings situated on Cass Avenue, facing Brookhaven Plaza just north of Plainfield Road.  The city is using that mall as a model for the type of development it would like to see built on the city-owned property that includes Heritage Plaza and a vacant lot, Municipal Services Director Dan Gombac said Thursday at a meeting with the Brookhaven Plaza Merchants Association. “It doesn’t mean that’s set in stone,” he said. ”We just want to create a vision.”  Whether the city will sell the land or develop it in conjunction with a developer or business …

Chase Bank Plans Move Forward With Approval of Darien Commission

The city's Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of a new branch at Cass Avenue and 75th Street.

After securing a few concessions from bank representatives based upon objections of commissioners, the Darien Planning and Zoning Commission agreed Wednesday night to recommend approval of a new Chase Bank location at the southeast corner of the intersection of Cass Avenue and 75th Street. Darien City Planner Mike Griffith began a public hearing on the bank’s plans for the property by noting that Chase was requesting numerous variances from municipal code for the site, including parking setbacks, the number of curb cuts off Cass Avenue, the number of stacking spaces for drive-thru lanes, and the amount of landscaping. But the most notable variances requested by the bank involved signage. Griffith said the bank was requesting wall signage …

Colin Farrell Gets American Giving Award for Supporting Local Angelman Syndrome Group

Farrell received the first leadership award from Chase Bank's American Giving Awards, which aired Saturday on NBC.

The good vibes generated at last week’s Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (FAST) gala continued Saturday when actor Colin Farrell was honored for his work with the organization.  Chase Bank gave Farrell its first American Giving Award Leadership Award for the support he’s given to the organization, chaired by Darien’s Paula Evans.  Evans started FAST four years ago to raise awareness and funding for research into Angelman syndrome (AS), which is characterized by impaired speech and movement. Ainsley, Evans’ 7-year-old daughter, was born with AS.  The American Giving Awards, which aired Saturday on NBC, recognized grassroots organizations through a Facebook contest that culminated in the distribution of $2 million worth of …

City Council Approves $1.95M Deal with Chase Bank

Debate continued within the council until the vote. Chase now has 210 days to close on the sale.

The deal is on. The Darien City Council voted four to two, with one abstention, Monday in favor of a contract with Chase Bank for the purchase of city-owned property at 7501 Cass Ave. for $1.95 million.  Weeks of debate over the terms of the contract and whether a bank was a good fit with the lot continued up until the vote. Alderman Tina Beilke said several of her ward’s residents told her they didn’t think Darien needed another bank. Others expressed concern that a second Chase branch in the city could hurt some of the smaller local banks that have long called Darien home.  With neighboring towns such as Burr Ridge and Willowbrook drawing shoppers and diners, Beilke said she feared Darien would suffer a long-term financial loss by …

Darien City Council Postpones Vote on Chase Bank Contract

Aldermen raised questions about a few clauses in the agreement for the sale of property at Cass Avenue and 75th Street.

It’s been nine months since Chase Bank signed a letter of intent to purchase land at 75th Street and Cass Avenue from the City of Darien for $2 million — and it will be at least another two weeks before the city council votes on a contract. Several aldermen raised questions during Monday’s city council meeting about certain stipulations in the contract, prompting Mayor Kathleen Weaver to postpone a scheduled vote.  The discussion centered on two conditions Chase requested in the agreement.  Chase called for a drive that runs through the Heritage Plaza parking lot as well as city-owned property at Cass and Plainfield Road, which would include two access points onto Plainfield. The bank also asked for a clause that prohibited other full-…

Ya, where's your answer to that one Bryon? What about all the City of Darien employees that lost their jobs, because "Darien has no money"? Money that was wasted on toxic/contaminated/abandoned land parcels, a custom built water tower, (by the way...is it supposed to be a lighthouse or a windmill?) , blue street signs, oh and your raises and bonus's?   more ›
