Darien and Woodridge welcomed a number of new businesses in 2012, said goodbye to a few and honored others for their longtime commitment to the community.
Small business is often said to be the backbone of a community, and in 2012 we saw Darien and Woodridge bring in a handful of new businesses. Of course, with each year we must say goodbye to some local favorites, such as Smashburger this year. Still, it's great to see longtime local businesses honored for their commitment to the community. You may recognize the restaurant from TV shows like "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives," "Chicago's Best" and "Check Please."
Chuck's Southern Comfort Cafe, best known for its BBQ and Cajun-Creole, will open at 8025 S Cass Avenue (formerly Cornerstone Restaurant) in spring 2013. "[We will open] anywhere from end of March to the end of May," says general manager Lisa Cortez. "It all depends on how everything progesses." The lack of snow this winter has helped speed along construction, she added, noting that they'll be building out to accomodate smokers. With one location already in Burbank, Chuck's has acquired a loyal following. Chuck’s Southern Comforts Café, whose Burbank, IL, flagship was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, wants to purchase and remodel the old Cornerstone Restaurant building.
The owners of Chuck’s Southern Comforts Café are looking to Darien as the site for a second restaurant. But their purchase of the former Cornerstone Restaurant building at 8025 S. Cass Ave. is dependent on a $300,000 economic incentive from the city of Darien. Café representative Jim Pine said in an email to the city that without the incentive, Chuck’s wouldn’t be able to complete necessary remodeling, including replacing the parking lot, curbing and driveways. Failure to secure the funding would either “delay or stop the project,” he wrote, because the contract to purchase the building depends on receiving extra help.
