Marty Casey, the principal for Lace Elementary School in Darien, was presented a check for $1,000 from the Darien Chamber of Commerce Monday night. The school received the award at Monday night's City Council meeting for having the most participants in the Darien Dash this year. The Darien Dash is held every year on the third Sunday in May. The race is organized by the Darien Chamber of Commerce and raises funds for the community of Darien and it surrounding communities. "[The race] brings the whole Lace school together—the staff, students and parents all have a common goal to work for ... More than 400 runners are expected to stream through Darien’s Hinsbrook neighborhood Sunday for the 12th annual Chamber of Commerce Darien Dash. The springtime tradition, however, got a bit of a facelift this year. For the first time, runners will be timed more precisely with an electronic chip inside their bib. The chip will trigger the timer once runners pass through the starting gate and shut off as soon as they cross the finish line. The Darien Dash also got an endorsement this year from the Chicago Area Runners Association. The seal means that it’s a high quality race and that CARA members can earn points toward distance and participation awards.
