Last fall members established a fund for future building; group seeks to raise $50,000.
As Darien Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2838’s membership continues to climb, members are hoping to soon have a building of their own to put down their roots. In the past, Post 2838 has been able to meet at a variety of spots in Darien School District 61 facilities. “Unfortunately, schools have things going on and, on some rare occasions, we've had to meet in uncomfortable places such as teachers' lounges and small meeting rooms,” said Brad Drake, who served for several years in Afghanistan and joined the Darien VFW in 2006. “After one of these rare occasions, members became quite vocal and serious about us trying to do something to get our own building.” Last year Drake and several other members began talking about how nice it would be to…

Unit achieves highest honor bestowed to VFW posts in U.S.
Ed Oldis may be 89 but the commander of Darien Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2838 does not plan on slowing down anytime soon. The World War II veteran calls himself “well blessed” and said his involvement with the post helps him stay young. “It’s been fun to be the commander for seven years,” he said. “I’ve got great companions in the post.” What has Oldis energized most recently is the number of honors Post 2838 has received. Besides achieving All-State Post honors, the second highest honor a post can receive, for membership and community action, members have also been honored with the prestigious All-American Post award, the highest honor bestowed to VFW posts in the United States. Post 2838 ranked first in the world in its division. All…
