Xavier D. Sparkman, 19, of the 2100 block of South Harding in Chicago, was arrested around 8:20 p.m. at the 75th Street Walmart, Darien police said. Police said Sparkman walked past Walmart’s cash registers with eight bottles of alcohol, worth about $89, in his backpack. He was charged with retail theft and given a July 17 court date. Raymond Richard Bindgen, 52, of the 600 block of 70th Street in Darien, was arrested around 9:50 p.m. on the block where he lives, police said. Someone shattered, but didn’t break through, the glass in the front door of Veet Tobacco around 1:52 a.m., Darien police said. Nothing was missing and no one got inside, the owner said. The glass will cost at least $300 to replace. Someone took an iron bench overnight from the front porch of a home on the 2200 block of Carlow, police said. The bench was worth about $125. Someone took a woman’s wallet from her purse while she was shopping around 11:40 a.m. at the 75th Street Walmart, police said. The total loss was more than $300. James J. Sanchez, 24, of the 400 block of West 79th Street in Willowbrook, was arrested around 10 p.m. at the 75th Street Walmart, Darien police said. Officers said Sanchez switched the price tags on a box of golf balls. He was charged with retail theft with court dates pending. An iPad that was charging near an ice rink inside the Darien Sportsplex was stolen between 5:05 and 5:50 a.m., police said. A teacher left the iPad during a class, and when she returned from the lesson it was gone. The device was worth about $700. Someone shattered the T-top window over the passenger seat of a car parked overnight on the 8400 block of Captons Lane, police said. The incident caused about $500 in damage.

Chicago police arrested the man last week and turned him over to Bartlett police for a similar crime that took place in that suburb, Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown said.
A man in police custody in Bartlett may have a connection to the May 25 robbery of the Speedway on Lemont Road in Darien, Police Chief Ernest Brown said. The man was arrested in Chicago last week in the process of buying drugs, Brown said. Chicago police turned the man over to Bartlett as a suspect in a similar robbery that took place in that suburb, which is roughly 30 miles northwest of Darien. During the Darien incident, a man with a blue bandana around his face brandished an “edged weapon” and demanded the Speedway clerk open the cash register, according to police reports. Someone put two holes in a double-paned window on the front side of a home on the 7700 block of Williams around 11 a.m., Darien police said. It’s not clear how the holes were made or how much it will cost to fix the window. A man took a bouquet of roses and several greeting cards from the Jewel-Osco at 7335 Cass Ave. around 11 a.m., police said. Police described the suspect as a black man who is about 40-years-old and weighing 185 pounds, wearing a dark shirt and shiny gray jogging pants. Steven Glodic, 18, of the 5700 block of South Kensington in Countryside; Marcel Picallo, 19 of the 7400 block of Brookdale in Darien; and a 17-year-old female from Burr Ridge were arrested around 3:10 a.m. near the intersection of Wirth and Howdy, Darien police said. Officers responding to a noise complaint said they found the three teens in the intersection with a can of beer and a bottle of vodka next to them on the ground. The teens smelled strongly of alcohol, police said. Each was charged with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor. A robber brandishing an “edged weapon” took $500 from the cash register at the Speedway at 8301 Lemont Road around 1:44 a.m. May 25, Darien Police said. Police said the robber showed the clerk the weapon, the exact type of which is unknown, and demanded the clerk open the cash register. The clerk was not harmed during the incident. The robber is described as about 5-feet, 3-inches tall, 155 pounds, possibly Hispanic and roughly 25-years-old, police said. His face was covered with a blue bandana. Someone drove a car onto the lawn of a home on the 1900 block of 72nd Street overnight, Darien police said. The incident caused about $50 in damage. That same night, a car was also driven onto the lawn of a home on the 1700 block of Boulder, causing about $300 in damage. A mailbox was knocked off its post overnight on the 6900 block of High Road, police said. The incident caused about $30 in damage. Steve E. Avalos, 27, of the 4000 block of Northwood Drive in Corpus Christi, TX, was arrested around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Cass Avenue and 63rd Street, Darien police said. Officers said Avalos was driving erratically while traveling northbound on Cass. He smelled strongly of alcohol and had red, glassy eyes, as well as droopy eyelids, police said. He told police he was drinking, but refused to take a chemical test, the report said.
