The Darien-Woodridge Fire Department will be collecting donations for 'Operation Support Our Troops' at it annual open house on Saturday.
The Darien-Woodridge Fire District is hosting its annual Fire Prevention Week Open House on today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Open House will take place at its headquarters station at 7550 Lyman, in Darien. The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Have 2 Ways Out.” The department's new 105-foot ladder truck and an ambulance will be available for people to see and sit in. Firefighter clothing also will be available to try on, so folks are encouraged to bring cameras to take pics. Also on display will be fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as a display of things that were burned in actual fires. At 6:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, a new 105’ aerial ladder will be placed in service with the Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District during a “wet down” ceremony. This vehicle was ordered last fall and arrived three months ago. For the past three months members have been transferring and mounting equipment, and learning how to drive and operate this larger vehicle. The truck was purchased at a cost of over $850,000 from Pierce Fire Equipment, in Appleton, Wisconsin. The purchase was made possible due to restructuring existing debt, and no new taxes will be involved. It is anticipated that this vehicle will have a good service life of over 15 years. Crews were preparing to search a pond in the Windsor Lakes apartment complex in Woodridge Monday night when a missing child was found.
A young child who was presumed missing, possibly in a pond near the Windsor Lakes apartment complex in Woodridge, has been found. Officials reported the child missing around 7:30 p.m. and were preparing to search a pond in the apartment complex. The child was found, alive and well, in a private swimming pool. Robert Morris, fire prevention director at the Darien-Woodridge Fire Department, said the child was reported missing from the Windsor Lakes area and crews were preparing to search the pond as a precautionary measure. "Fortunately everything ended well and the child was found," Morris said. Early reports said the child was five years old, but those reports have not been confirmed. Darien business owners find their way from grief to innovation
Life has presented plenty of challenges to James and Sandra Patrick. Both grew up in the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago. They became parents as teens. And as an infant, their firstborn was diagnosed with a catastrophic kidney problem that would eventually take his life. But their challenges also taught them to work hard, to think outside the box and to have faith.
