Daylight Savings Time: FD Urges Fire Safety Measures

The Hinsdale Fire Department says daylight savings time is a great opportunity to change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries.

The following is a release from the Hinsdale Fire Department: The Hinsdale Fire Department urges residents to change their smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries when changing their clocks for daylight savings time on Sunday morning at 2 a.m.  The National Fire Protection Association reports that a home fire death occurs somewhere in the nation approximately every three hours. In fact, home fires kill 540 children, 14 years old and under, each year. Having a working smoke alarm and CO detector can provide those crucial extra seconds to escape a burning home. Therefore, it is critical for families to adopt the life-saving habit of the "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" program to keep their families safe.  When checking …

Daylight Saving Ends Sunday Morning

Don't forget to set your clocks back before you go to sleep Saturday night.

Three cheers for an extra hour of sleep Saturday night. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday. Make sure you don't arrive at your Bears game-watching party an hour early by setting your clock back an hour before you go to bed Saturday. The concept of daylight saving was first practiced in Germany as an energy saving measure during World War I, according to National Geographic. The U.S. set a standard schedule in 1918, though to this day it's optional for states to observe. The schedule has undergone a number of changes of the year, the most recent happening in 2007.
