Convicted Woodridge Carjacker Gets 40 Years in Absentia

The former nuclear engineer, who has been missing since September 2012 after his arrest for armed hijacking, was convicted in April of a Class X Felony.

Former nuclear engineer Michael Buhrman, 32, of Coal City, was sentenced in absentia to 40 years in prison on Wednesday for the May 2012 aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm of a woman’s car in a Kohl’s parking lot in eastern Woodridge near the Darien border. According to a DuPage County State’s Attorney press release, once apprehended, Buhrman would be required to serve at least 50 percent of the sentence. He was convicted in mid-April, also in absentia, after a 45-minute jury deliberation.  Buhrman, who removed a GPS monitoring device in September 2012 and jumped bail, remains a fugitive. Fugitive Woodridge Carjacker Convicted in Absentia

Nuclear engineer and Navy vet Michael Buhrman, 32, has been missing since jumping bail in September 2012 after his arrest for the May carjacking in a Kohl’s parking lot at the border of Woodridge and Darien.

A jury has convicted in absentia former nuclear engineer Michael Buhrman, 32, of Coal City, of a class-X felony for the May 2012 aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm of a woman’s car in a Kohl’s parking lot in Woodridge. Buhrman, who removed a GPS monitoring device in September 2012 and jumped bail, remains a fugitive. DuPage County prosecutors believe that he may have fled the country. A no-bond arrest warrant remains active for him. Men Charged in Robbery Near Clarendon Hills Plead Not Guilty

All three men had arraignment hearings in DuPage County court on Monday, Pioneer Local reports.

All three men charged in the March 7 robbery of a juvenile that took place in an unincorporated area near Clarendon Hills plead not guilty in DuPage County court Monday, according to Pioneer Local. Kelechekwu Akuba, Leverenzel Booth and Jerron Wilbut made their pleas during separate hearings in front of Judge John Kinsella, who according to Pioneer Local informed the men that the state's attorney had filed aggravated robbery and armed robbery charges against the men in addition to the original robbery charges. The armed robbery charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, Pioneer Local reports. Darien Triple-Murder Trial Can Be Photographed, Judge Rules

The murder trial of Johnny Borizov, set to begin next month, will be the first in DuPage County open to photographers, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The trial of a man charged with plotting the murder of three Darien residents will be open to photographers, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday, a first in DuPage County according to the newspaper. Johnny Borizov of Willow Springs will be on trial beginning April 16 for the murder of Jeffrey, Lori and Michael Kramer, who were shot to death in March 2010 by Jacob Nodarse in a scheme, prosecutors allege, plotted by Borizov and meant to kill Angela Kramer, daughter of Jeffrey and Lori, sister of Michael, and father of Borizov's son. Angela Kramer was in the house at the time and survived by hiding in a closet and dialing 911, officials have said. Woodridge Drug Ring Leader Sentenced to 20 Years

Dorian Luzaj, 29, pleaded guilty to cannabis trafficking Thursday morning.

A Woodridge man who led a drug ring with ties to California pleaded guilty to trafficking charges Thursday and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.  Dorian Luzaj, 29, of the 6300 block of Winston Drive in Woodridge, pleaded guilty to cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony, during a hearing with Judge Robert Kleeman.  Luzaj was the leader of a drug ring with ties to California that was responsible for the distribution of more than 600 pounds of cannabis per month to other cannabis dealers throughout the Chicago area, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.  On May 20, 2010, Luzaj and 11 other people were arrested on drug conspiracy charges. Former D61 Employee Charged After Stealing From District

Downers Grove resident Rosemary Deno was charged with misdemeanor theft after turning herself in Friday. All of the stolen money has been reimbursed to the district.

A former employee of Darien School District 61 was charged with stealing from the district after turning herself in, officials announced Friday.  According to a district press release, the employee made fraudulent time sheet entries that inflated the number of hours which the defendant is entitled to be paid.  Rosemary Deno, 61, of the 6000 block of Lee Avenue in Downers Grove, was charged with misdemeanor theft on Friday after turning herself in at the DuPage County Courthouse. Her next court date is March 13.  School officials were aware this was happening last year. At the Aug. 28, 2012, board meeting, member Claudia Manley mentioned the incident. At that point, the employee no longer worked in the district and the $1,600 in stolen …

Darien Man Accused of Seeking Hit Man From Jail to Kill Ex-Girlfriend

Joseph Spitalli, of Darien, was charged in November with kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and slitting the throat of her new boyfriend. He appeared in court Monday.

A Darien man charged with kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and slitting the throat of her new boyfriend was additionally accused Monday of trying to put out a hit on his ex, The Chicago Tribune reported.  Joseph Spitalli, 34, of the 7500 block of Country Lane in Darien, was previously denied bail. He's charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping, a Class X felony. If convicted he faces life in prison with no possibility of parole.  Police say they responded to a battery call Nov. 16 and found 31-year-old Skokie resident Teymur Huseynli dead in the front lawn from a knife wound. Man Charged in Stabbing Death, Sex Assault of Woodridge Woman

Adam Belmont, of Northlake, is charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Woodridge resident Alyssa Van Meter.

A Northlake man is accused of stabbing to death and then sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend, a Woodridge resident. He was denied bond in DuPage County Court on Monday.  According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, 23-year-old Adam Belmont, of Northlake, is charged with the first-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend, Woodridge resident Alyssa Van Meter.  Belmont appeared in court Monday and was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of home invasion, both Class X felonies.  Stay updated with breaking news alerts about your community.  His next court date is Jan. 14. Elmhurst A Virginia man convicted last month of attempted predatory sexual assault of a child and sexual exploitation wants a new trial, records show. Priyang Parikh awaits sentencing, but has filed a motion claiming he should be granted a new trial because of pre-trial errors by the judge and because jurors were not given the option of public indecency as an available lesser offense for consideration. The jury found Parikh guilty of exposing himself to a young girl at a 2010 wedding in Elmhurst. A young girl, and other children, chased Parikh out of the hotel after he took the girl into a side room under the pretense of giving her candy.
