The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
One drink could be the standard for drunken drivingat least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. SATURDAY, APRIL 27 Lisa Hawks, 33, of the 400 block of 74th Street, Downers Grove, was arrested on the 1500 Block of Plainfield Road for driving under the influence, and failure to yield (private drive). Hawks was processed and released with a June 4 court date in Wheaton. Darien police reports, April 13-14
SUNDAY, APRIL 14 Juan Delacruz, 25, of the 200 block of Radcliff, Bolingbrook, was arrested on the 8100 block of Cass Avenue at 10:01 p.m. Delacruz was charged with driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor, suspended/revoked registration and speeding. Delacruz was processed and released with a May 21 court date in Wheaton. Francisco Perez-Conde, 35, of the 2100 block of Country Club Drive, Woodridge, was arrested on the 7500 block of Lyman Street at 5:59 p.m. Perez-Conde was charged with obstructed rear registration plate cover and no valid driver’s license. FRIDAY, APRIL 12 Someone shattered the driver's side window of a locked Chevrolet Trailblazer and took a purse from the back seat floor on the 7500 block of Lemont Road. The incident occurred sometime between 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. The total loss was $1,095. Kevin Kallenback, 25 of the 15000 block of Wingate, Homer Glen, was arrested on the 7100 block of Cass Avenue at 4:30 a.m. He was charged with driving under the influence, operating uninsured motor vehicle, speeding and improper lane usage. TUESDAY, APRIL 9 Antonio Asuncion, 56, of the 6500 block of Berrywood, Downers Grove, was arrested at 3:57 a.m. at 75th Street and Cass Avenue. Asuncion was charged with operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving on a suspended license. Asuncion was processed and released with a court date pending in Downers Grove. Does it really matter if it's .05 or .08? Does anyone know of any DUI that has had his/her license revoked for any significant period of time? Until and unless our judicial system begins to take DUI's seriously, nothing will ever change.
