Election 2011

Planson, Kuhn and Skoda Win District 86 Election

The race was a close one, with Richard Skoda edging out Vinaya Sharma by 76 votes.

The race for the three open spots on the District 86 school board was a close one with fewer than 200 votes separating the top four vote-getters for a good part of the race. In the end, Richard Skoda edged out Vinaya Sharma by 76 votes. Sharma, who has served on the District 86 board for four years said he knew that it was going to be a close race going into it. "Naturally I'm disappointed, but the people have spoken," said Sharma. "I congratulate the three individuals, and I hope they do what's best for the students and the district." The six candidates ran on two slates for the election. On the first slate were the top three names on the ballot: Jennifer Planson, Michael Kuhn and Vinaya Sharma. On the second slate was a group running as…

City Council Members Dispute Oppositions' Campaign Allegations

On eve of consolidated election, officials refute recent claims against their practices.

Darien City Council members spoke out during Monday’s meeting to refute claims made against city practices in campaign literature and elsewhere during the weekend.  Comments recently published on fliers and in other forums lambasted the city’s public safety management, economic development efforts and financial practices. Mayor Kathleen Weaver, as well Ward Six Alderman Sylvia McIvor, Ward Two Alderman John Galan and Treasurer Michael Coren, strongly contested several of the claims. “It is important to separate fiction from fact,” said McIvor, who chairs the Darien Police Committee and responded to allegations regarding the police department.  According to a letter—mailed to Darien homes—from mayoral candidate Kevin Monaghan, Weaver …

I have been to plenty of city counsel meetings Rob. We have seen from this administration that department heads such as the chief of police and the entire police department have voiced their opinion against reducing manpower, but those expressions fell on deaf ears. What makes you think they would listen to the residents if they don't even listen to those most qualified to offer opinions? Also I …   more ›

City Seeks Taxpayer Permission to Find Lower Electric Rates

Question on the April 5 ballot will ask voters for permission to seek out more affordable electricity rates.

While many referendums ask for more money, next week Darien is asking taxpayers for permission to seek out more affordable electricity rates to help residents and small businesses keep cash in their pocketbooks. The question on the April 5 ballot will ask voters for “authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for its residential and small commercial retail customers who have not opted out of such a program.” Assistant City Administrator Scott Coren said he sees no downside to voting in favor of the referendum. “If we receive higher bids we can default back to the ComEd rate and we wouldn’t be any worse for it,” he said. “But we are expecting to save money. I don’t see any reason not to try and take a chance to save money.” In …

Part II- 4)While it is clear that residents can opt out of the program if they want to continue with the same power supplier, I do not see any opportunity to opt out of the costs associated with the program. The bottom line is all residents will share the costs for legal fees, consulting fees, administration fees, and NIMEC membership fees. What are the projected costs? 5)My biggest concern …   more ›

Election 2011: District 63 Candidates on their Roles

Candidates offer their perspectives on key Cass School District 63 issues.

The Illinois School Code addresses the role of the school board. The code makes several points. One is to charge the school board to direct the superintendent in the administration of "the budget, building plans, the locations of sites, the selection, retention, and dismissal of employees, and the selection of textbooks, instructional material, and courses of study." It's a pretty hefty charge. The key to being an effective school board member is to spend the necessary time to learn about the issues, to do everything possible to stay informed about those issues, and to build a strong partnership with the superintendent and administration.   The school board should represent the interests of the entire community, not just parents of …

Election 2011: Cass District 63 Candidates on Curriculum

Candidates offer their perspectives on key Cass School District 63 issues.

For the most part, the curriculum is strong.  However, it has to be modified to be compliant with new standards recently adopted by the Illinios State Board of Education. These new standards are referred to as the New Illinois State Learning Standards, and they incorporate something called the Common Core Standards, which are designed to make education more uniform on a national level.  I think the current curriculum in Cass District 63 is strong, as evidenced by the awards it consistently wins for academic excellence. It is not really the job of the board to make changes in curriculum. We hire the best administrators and teachers we can. They are the experts in education and know far better than the board the best programs for students’ …

Election 2011: District 61 Candidates on their Roles

Candidates offer their perspectives on key Darien School District 61 issues.

The school board is legally responsible to the taxpayers and state for school district operations. The board’s role is to develop goals and policies that reflect our community needs and values, be financial stewards to the taxpayers, monitor district academic performance and ensure progress through curriculum, work cooperatively with board members and local government entities, and employ a superintendent. The superintendent reports to the board and carries out the day-to-day operations. The superintendent is entrusted to operate effectively and efficiently in a manner consistent with the goals and policies of the board, holding all employees accountable, and to foster responsive leadership. The board is responsible for holding the …
