The annual Fun Run in Darien will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which promotes breast cancer research and education.
On Friday, Cass Junior High will be hosting Mrs. T’s Fun Run, benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which promotes breast cancer research and education. The idea for the Fun Run began 11 years ago. Jenna Kirwan, a former Cass student, came up with the idea after former math teacher, Louise Tepavchevich, was diagnosed with breast cancer. That year, more than $2,000 was raised. Tepavchevich has since recovered, and the event has grown tremendously, with the goal this year to raise more than $10,000. Students say they are eager to participate and raise money because so many are touched by family or friends who are battling cancer. Cass’s student council sponsors and organizes the event. The school is inviting the public to join …

Students, teachers, firefighters and police officers shaved their heads Friday, raising more than $17,000 for pediatric cancer research.
They say two heads are better than one. Try 35. That’s how many people shaved their scalps Friday at Cass Junior High, raising more than $17,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which supports childhood cancer research. Cass teachers Becky Kriz and Katie Giradot coordinated — and participated in — the school’s event. They organized it in memory of Ben Purcell, a 5-year-old boy who passed away last month from a rare form of lung cancer. Ben was close friends with Kriz’s 8-year-old niece, Katie, who shaved her head earlier this month in tribute. “I don’t think I’m that brave,” Katie told the packed gym. “This is a small thing I can do.” Darien-Woodridge firefighters, Darien police officers, and Cass students and teachers (as well as one …

Red bracelets supporting a Lakeview Junior High eighth-grader’s recovery are now available to a wider audience. Cozzi Corner Hot Dogs and Beef in Downers Grove will be selling the bands that say Hunter’s Hope for $1, as well as hosting a six-month long fundraiser to help the family pay medical costs. The 14-year-old Downers Grove boy remains hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries when he was struck by a car Feb. 26 while crossing Beller Drive in Darien with his bike. The hospital is not releasing any information about his condition. Last week the rubber bracelets were for sale only at Lakeview and Prairieview schools. In just that first week, students raised about $750. A Lakeview parent who wishes to remain anonymous launched …
