Girls Swimming: Downers Grove North's Gabby Sims Wins State Title

Sims, a junior, broke a pool record in the 100-yard freestyle, leading the Trojans to a sixth-place finish at the IHSA swimming and diving finals.

Downers Grove North junior Gabby Sims won her second individual state title in dramatic fashion Saturday, breaking the pool record in the 100-yard freestyle at the IHSA girls swimming and diving finals in Evanston. Sims posted a pool-record 49.57 in the freestyle final—the second-fastest time ever swum at a state meet. She also became one of only four swimmers in Illinois history to break the 50-second mark at a state meet, according to mom Janice Sims. Gabby Sims finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (54:02), the event she won last year. Finishing first was Glenbrook South senior Olivia Smoliga (51.43), who also won the 50-yard freestyle (21.99). Going into Saturday's final, Sims was ranked first in the 100-yard freestyle and second …

Red Devils Prep for State Swim and Dive Meet

Seven of the Hinsdale Central competitors will be seniors in their last high school meet.

The first swimming event scheduled at this weekend’s state meet at New Trier Township High School in Winnetka will be the 200-yard Medley Relay. The event leads off every swim meet and, according to Hinsdale Central head girls swimming coach Bob Barber, it is a crucial tone-setter. “If we can have a good medley, our day goes pretty well,” Barber said. “If we have an average medley we have to climb back into it, and if we have a bad medley we’re in trouble.” So it must be a good thing that Barber’s medley relay team—which features seniors Hannah Lillioja, Lindsay Pavich, Genna Heidkamp and Jen Coady—is coming off a school record time of 1:46.43 at Saturday’s Lyons Township Sectional. There are 11 other events; Hinsdale Central has …

HC girls have an excellent team this season. If things fall their way, the Red Devils could very well place among the top three or four teams. At the very least, I'm sure you'll see some individual swimmers bringing home all-state medals.   more ›

Devils' Heidkamp Cherishes Memorable State Meet

Hinsdale Central places sixth as team; New Trier wins IHSA girls state swimming championship.

Hinsdale Central junior Genna Heidkamp had high hopes of making a strong showing in the IHSA state swimming meet Friday and Saturday at Evanston High School. She never anticipated accomplishing what she did, however. Heidkamp collected four medals for top-12 finishes, including placing third in the 100-yard butterfly (55.88). "Everything I achieved was unexpected," Heidkamp said. "I never expected to go so fast. It's pretty amazing to me because I've worked so hard for so long, so it's a great feeling to finally be where I'm at now. I'm really happy with what happened." Heidkamp was seeded 19th in the 100 butterfly, but dropped a stunning 3.07 seconds to finish second during Friday's preliminaries (55.70). She also teamed sophomores Olivia…

Hinsdale Central Captures Another Sectional Championship

Hinsdale South's Maya Rodrigues, Hannah Veselik cherish first state berths.

DOWNERS GROVE -- After completing the 100-yard breaststroke at the Downers Grove South Sectional Saturday, Hinsdale South junior Maya Rodrigues didn't want to look at the scoreboard to find out her time. It turns out she didn't need to. "When I heard my teammates screaming, I knew it was good news," said Rodrigues, who earned her first state berth. "I was so nervous. It's such a weight off my shoulders. There's been so much pressure the entire season. I'm so excited and I'm pretty much speechless." First-place finishers and those achieving qualifying standards Saturday advance to the state meet Nov. 19-20 at Evanston High School. Rodrigues, who fell just six-tenths of a second shy of earning a state berth last year as a sophomore, placed …
