Shorewood's Bosak Boys Place in Klum Costume Contest

The Bosak brothers of Shorewood were finalists in a nationwide Halloween costume contest.

Paula Bosak's three sons came in the top 10 of a nationwide Patch Halloween contest. Troy, Brett and Aaron Bosak of Shorewood dressed as the band Kiss and made it all the way to the finals, but apparently were not the favorite of celebrity judge Heidi Klum. Instead, Klum went with this entry from the Wyckoff, NJ, Patch. But the Bosaks still won $1,031 to be donated to the charity of their choice, and they chose the Will County Humane Society in Shorewood. Nearly 2,700 Halloween costume contest entries were submitted. The Bosaks entered through both the Shorewood and Darien Patches. Congratulations to the Bosak brothers for their creativity and generosity.

Trick or Treat Safely with these Halloween Tips

Keep the tricks to a minimum with these tips for a fun Halloween.

Ghosts and goblins will soon flood Darien’s neighborhoods in search of the ultimate reward: candy. Patch has compiled this guide to help your little pumpkin stay safe this Halloween.  There are no set hours for trick or treating in Darien, but the Darien Police Department recommends finishing the rounds before it gets dark. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office offers this advice:

A History of Halloween

A bit of background on the centuries-old celebration, plus some facts and figures about the spookiest day of the year.

In modern-day America, we know it as the day of dress-up, tricks and treats. Halloween is the day when adults and kids alike get to play pretend, donning the silliest or scariest get-up they dare. And then, of course, there’s the candy. But the origins of the holiday have nothing to do with going door-to-door in search of something good to eat. According to history.com, Halloween dates back 2,000 year to ancient Ireland, the United Kingdom and France, where the Celts celebrated their new year on Nov. 1. The day marked the end of summer, which meant the harvest and the beginning of the cold, dark winter — the day when the Celts believed that the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was at its thinnest. On Oct. 31, they …

Map: DuPage Sheriff to Perform Sex Offender Compliance Check on Halloween

Plus, a map of registered sex offenders living in Darien.

It’s typical to see more squad cars on the streets on Halloween as police try to keep the tricks to a minimum. Some of those cars, however, will be on a specific mission. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office will again coordinate a countywide sweep on Halloween to ensure registered sex offenders are in compliance with rules regarding the holiday. Convicted sex offenders who are on parole, probation, mandatory supervised release or conditional discharge are not allowed to give out candy on Halloween, according to Illinois law.  There are about 400 registered sex offenders in DuPage County, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Dawn Domrose said. Of those 400, about 50 aren’t allowed to give out candy.  On Monday, the sheriff’s Sexual Predator …

Seasonal Coffees: Bites Nearby

Coffee creations so frightningly delicious you’ll FALL for them all.

Some people refer to coffee as “the nectar of the gods”; others view it as neccessary to their existence. Coffee is so popular we now celebrate Coffee Month in August, Coffee Week (the last week in Sept.) and National Coffee Day on Sept. 29.  Recent studies indicate coffee drinking can help lower the risk of some cancers.  If you’re a true coffee lover you don’t need medical or commercial reasons to drink it.  But local coffee shops want to entice you anyway with their seasonal fall flavors, all less than $5 for a medium-sized beverage. Caribou Coffee in Darien has brought back its Pumpkin Latte and Pumpkin White Chocolate Mocha. In addition, a portion of all packaged sales of one pound coffee is donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. …

Kids Find Post Trick-or-Treat Fun at Darien Lions Halloween Party

The annual party is scheduled to run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Darien Sportsplex.

In most towns, trick or treating is the main event on Halloween. In Darien, it’s just the beginning of the fun. For more than 35 years, the Darien Lions Club has hosted its annual Halloween Party to the delight of costumed kids and the relief of parents looking for a safe place to celebrate the holiday.  The tradition is expected to draw roughly 1,000 kids to the Darien Sportsplex from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday for games, magic and, of course, candy. “It gives kids the chance to come play some games and gives them somewhere else to go to enjoy Halloween,” Lions publicity chair Tom Belczak said. When the party started in the early 1970s, the Lions held it at Eisenhower Junior High.  “Our wives baked cookies and Lions purchased soda,” said …
