Football: Downers Grove North Eliminates Thornton, Advances to Quarterfinals

Downers Grove North pulled off another big win Friday night, defeating Thornton to advance to the IHSA Class 7A quarterfinals. A week after handing top-seeded Batavia its first loss of the season, the No. 8 Trojans (7-4) turned in another solid performance, winning 29-13 over No. 5 Thornton (8-3). Downers Grove jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first half after capitalizing on two early turnovers by the Wildcats. The Trojans went up 29-0 in the fourth before Thornton posted a couple of long touchdown plays in the final three minutes of the game. By that time, the game was out of reach. “Just started executing too late, I guess,” Thornton quarterback JoWahn Brown told Sun-Times Media after the game. Downers Grove will host No. 2 Benet …

Downers Grove North football team is ready for Round 2 of the IHSA Class 7A playoffs. The No. 8 Trojans (6-4) will take on No. 5 Thornton (8-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Thornton High School, 151st Street and Broadway Avenue in Harvey. Football: Hinsdale South's Season Ends With Loss to Oak Forest

Oak Forest's running game proved to be too much for the Hornets in their first-round playoff exit.

Oak Forest outgained Hinsdale South 364 yards to 93 during a 29-0 win over the Hornets in the first round of the 6A playoffs Friday night, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Hinsdale South had just four first downs. Running back Arian Toney had 44 yards on 14 carries and quarterback D.J. Deolitsis finished with 36 yards on 7-of-15 passing. Oak Forest got 106 yards rushing yards from Ben Santiago and 113 from Tyler Usterbowski. The Sun-Times reported that only 20 of Oak Forest's yards were gained through the air. “We lost to a quality football team tonight,” Hinsdale South coach Mike Barry said.  The Hornets finished the 2012 season with a 6-4 record.  For the full Sun-Times recap, click here.

Downers Grove North Falls to Glenbard West, Faces Batavia in Playoff Opener

The Trojans (5-4, 2-4) finished their regular season with a 26-0 loss. They'll travel to Batavia at 7 p.m. Friday.

The No. 8 Downers Grove North football team will face No. 1 Batavia in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs Friday, the IHSA announced Monday afternoon. The game will be held at 7 p.m. at Batavia High School, 1201 Main St. in Batavia. The Trojans (5-4, 2-4) wrapped up their regular season Saturday with a 26-0 loss to Glenbard West (9-0, 6-0). The win marked the Hilltoppers' fourth undefeated season in five years, according to the Chicago Tribune. Batavia is also headed to the postseason with a perfect 9-0 record. Football Playoffs: Hinsdale South to Face No. 1 Seed Oak Forest in First Round

The high-scoring Bengals finished the regular season 8-1 and had seven wins by 21 points or more.

Hinsdale South will travel to Oak Forest this weekend as a No. 8 seed for a first-round 6A playoff game against the No. 1 seed Bengals, according to the IHSA football playoff brackets released over the weekend. The particular day and time for the game has not yet been set. Oak Forest finished with an 8-1 overall record in 2012, and a 5-1 record in the South Suburban Blue. The Bengals averaged nearly 40 points per game, and seven of their eight wins were by 21 points or more.  Lemont, who won the conference, was the only team to beat Oak Forest. The two teams met earlier this month, when the Huskies came from behind to beat the Red Devils in overtime.

Three weeks after Oak Park-River Forest came back from 21 points down to beat Hinsdale Central in overtime, the Red Devils will get their shot at revenge. According to the IHSA football playoff brackets released over the weekend, Hinsdale Central will host OPRF this weekend in the first round of the 8A tournament. The particular day and time for the game has not yet been set. The Red Devils finished the 2012 season with a 7-2 overall record; the Huskies are 6-3. Football: Hinsdale Central Gets Senior Night Win Over Gritty Dukes

The Red Devils head into the postseason with a 7-2 record, but didn't sound satisfied with their play in Friday's season finale.

Senior quarterback Brian Owens completed 13 of 23 passes for 223 yards and rushed for a touchdown as Hinsdale Central eked out a 20-17 win over York and improved its playoff resume in its regular season finale Friday night in Hinsdale. The Red Devils (7-2, 4-2) head into the playoffs after back-to-back wins, but head coach Rich Tarka wasn't too pleased with his team's performance against the Dukes, who finished the season without a win but hung around Friday night and were a defensive stop away from making things very interesting. "We just made enough mistakes to keep us out of our flow," Tarka said. A pair of fumbles, some missed assignments on the offensive line, and some forced throws by the quarterback were among "the little things" …
