Hinsdale South Pitcher Goes Distance in Win Over Central

A four-run third inning put the Hornets ahead, but they needed a strong finish to hold off the Red Devils.

The score: Hinsdale South 5, Hinsdale Central 4 The way it happened: Senior outfielder Matt Reschke keyed the Hinsdale South offense with a three-run triple in the third inning and senior Mike Rizzo pitched a complete game during the Hornets' home win Tuesday over the Red Devils. Central jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by junior Matt Muellner, but South rallied with a four-run third that saw Red Devils senior pitcher Basil Arain give up two singles, hit a batter, and walk in a run before Reschke's triple cleared the bases.  Rizzo gave up three runs in the fifth inning before retiring the Red Devils in order in both the sixth and seventh. Hinsdale Central Tight End Ian Bunting Commits to Michigan

The 6-foot-6 junior chose Ann Arbor in part because of a recently deceased family member's hope that he would be a Wolverine.

Hinsdale Central tight end Ian Bunting has committed to play his college ball at the University of Michigan after he graduates next year, the Chicago Tribune reports.  The 6-foot-6, 215-pound Hinsdale resident had scholarship offers from big-program schools including Notre Dame and USC, according to SB Nation. Bunting told the Tribune that he chose Michigan in part because his recently-deceased grandmother was a Wolverine and was hoping he'd have the opportunity to play in Ann Arbor. Hinsdale Central Principal Leaving for New Job in Iowa

After serving as Hinsdale Central's principal for three years, Michael McGrory will leave District 86 at the end of June.

Hinsdale Central Principal Michael McGrory is leaving District 86, according to Superintendent Nick Wahl.  McGrory, who has been Hinsdale Central's principal for the last three years, has accepted the position of principal at Muscatine High School in Iowa, McGrory's home state, and his last day of work in Hinsdale will be June 30. "We want to thank Mr. McGrory for his three years of service to the Hinsdale Central school community, and wish the best to him and his family in their move back to Iowa," Wahl wrote in a letter to the community. McGrory was quoted in the letter as saying the decision was a difficult one and that working at Hinsdale Central has been a "privilege and great administrative experience." Red Devils, Hornets Boys Basketball Remain Positive About Seasons

Hinsdale Central exited the playoffs with an upset loss, while Hinsdale South finished 7-19, but both teams stayed upbeat about their 2013 seasons.

Despite enduring some respective disappointments as their seasons drew to a close, both the Hinsdale Central Red Devils and the Hinsdale South Hornets boys basketball coaches struck an upbeat tone about their year, the Suburban Life reports. Hinsdale Central (18-7) were upset by 12-seed Geneva last Thursday, 55-49, and forced to leave the playoffs earlier than expected, but can fall back on a 12-win streak to start the calendar year and their first West Suburban Silver title since 2000, the paper said. "Our senior group was special," coach Nick Latorre said of the nine departing seniors. Hinsdale Central Hoops: Season Ends With Playoff Loss to Geneva

The West Suburban Silver champs lost, 55-49, in their playoff opener Thursday night in Wheaton.

Hinsdale Central's championship season came to an abrupt end Thursday night after a 55-49 loss to Geneva in the Wheaton Warrenville South Regional semifinal, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. It was the West Suburban Silver champs' first playoff game of 2013. See the full IHSA 4A playoff bracket here. Geneva (21-8) was led by senior Mike Trimble, who tallied 9 points in the second half and helped the Bulldogs down the stretch of a game tied at 36 after three quarters. Hinsdale Central, the Bolingbrook Sectional's No. 5 seed, led 44-43 with just under four minutes left, the Sun-Times reports, and trailed by a score of 47-46 with 2:25 to go. Hinsdale South's National Merit Finalists Honored

National Merit Finalists are now eligible for scholarships from the National Merit Corporation ranging from $500 to full tuition in post-secondary opportunity institutions.

The following is a release from Hinsdale Township High School District 86: Six students from Hinsdale South High School 35 students from Hinsdale Central High School were honored as National Merit Finalists by the National Merit Corporation. This designation is a prestigious honor as these students qualified from the more than 1.5 million juniors nationwide who took the PSAT/NMSQT last fall. $1.7 Million Worth of D86 Summer Projects Planned

The District 86 projects will include main hallway renovations at both campuses and a renovated girls locker room at Hinsdale South.

The year after major construction work took place at both campuses, summer 2013 facilities work at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South is expected to cost District 86 about $1.7 million, according to an administration report discussed at Monday night’s board of education meeting. The cost of the summer’s planned designed construction projects, which include main hall renovations at both schools, an expanded and renovated girls locker room at South, and new exhaust fans in the Central gym, is estimated by District 86 officials to be about $1.1 million, not to exceed $1.6 million. The cost estimate for non-design construction work such asbestos removal, transformer repair, and sidewalk repair is $140,250, and design-only costs like those for…

Hinsdale South Swimmer Qualifies for State Along With Crew of Red Devils

The IHSA state meet takes place Friday and Saturday at Evanston Township High School.

The IHSA girls swim and dive state meet takes place this weekend, and as usual, Hinsdale Central Red Devils can be found all over the events slate along with sophomore Rachel Hawken, Hinsdale South's lone qualifier. Last year, Hinsdale Central finished ninth in the team standings, led by a group of seniors who have since graduated. New Trier and Fenwick finished Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in 2011.
