Heroin Use in DuPage County an 'Epidemic,' State's Attorney Says

District 86 hosted a drug symposium on Nov. 7 at Hinsdale South High School that featured several speakers, including DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin, with first-hand knowledge of the dangers of heroin in the suburbs today.

Thirty deaths from heroin overdose have occurred in DuPage County during the last 12 months, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said during an event at Hinsdale South last week. “This is a real epidemic that we’re faced with,” Berlin said. The county’s top prosecutor was one of several speakers who took to the microphone in Darien on Nov. 7 to talk about the prevalence and dangers of heroin at Hinsdale Township High School District 86’s Drug Awareness Symposium. It’s important, Berlin said, that DuPage County community members learn and then spread the word about the dangers of heroin, a topic he said has not gotten the media attention it deserves. “This is really an education and a health issue,” he said. This is not a criminal issue, it is a societal issue and prohibition only makes the allure more enticing to our youth and results in more crime in our neighborhoods. Accidents will happen and people will OD but the net result will remain the same regardless of whether the substance is legal or illegal. Hinsdale South Swimmer Qualifies for State Along With Crew of Red Devils

The IHSA state meet takes place Friday and Saturday at Evanston Township High School.

The IHSA girls swim and dive state meet takes place this weekend, and as usual, Hinsdale Central Red Devils can be found all over the events slate along with sophomore Rachel Hawken, Hinsdale South's lone qualifier. Last year, Hinsdale Central finished ninth in the team standings, led by a group of seniors who have since graduated. New Trier and Fenwick finished Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in 2011. Hinsdale South Among Chicago Sun-Times' Top 50 High Schools

The Chicago Sun-Times this week ranked their Top 50 high schools, as well as elementary and middle schools, and local schools had a strong presence.

Hinsdale South is No. 34 on the Chicago Sun-Times list of the top 50 high schools in the Chicago area, which was released earlier this week. Hinsdale South is just ahead of St. Charles East, Lincoln-Way East, and Evanston (Nos. 35, 36, and 37, respectively), and just behind Lake Zurich, Oak Park-River Forest, and Batavia (Nos. 31, 32, and 33). The top three area high schools according to the Sun-Times—Northside College Prep, Payton College Prep, and Whitney Young—are located in Chicago. Volleyball: Hinsdale Central, South Play Thursday for Sectional Title

The match begins at 7 p.m. and is being played at Riverside-Brookfield High School.

The Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South girls volleyball teams will play for the Riverside-Brookfield Sectional Title Thursday night after each team won three straight matches during the last nine days. Hinsdale South, the sectional's No. 1 seed, defeated Oak Lawn (25-10, 26-24) in the sectional semifinal Tuesday after beating Argo (25-9, 25-7) and Riverside-Brookfield (25-27, 25-10, 25-23) in regional play on Oct. 23 and Oct. 25. Hinsdale Central, meanwhile, topped No. 2 seed St. Ignatius Tuesday (25-22, 18-25, 25-21) in the semifinal after wins over Reavis (25-10, 25-19) and No. 3 seed Whitney Young (9-25, 25-11, 25-22) in the regional they hosted last week.  The Red Devils are the No. 6 seed in the Riverside-Brookfield Sectional. Football: Hinsdale South's Season Ends With Loss to Oak Forest

Oak Forest's running game proved to be too much for the Hornets in their first-round playoff exit.

Oak Forest outgained Hinsdale South 364 yards to 93 during a 29-0 win over the Hornets in the first round of the 6A playoffs Friday night, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Hinsdale South had just four first downs. Running back Arian Toney had 44 yards on 14 carries and quarterback D.J. Deolitsis finished with 36 yards on 7-of-15 passing. Oak Forest got 106 yards rushing yards from Ben Santiago and 113 from Tyler Usterbowski. The Sun-Times reported that only 20 of Oak Forest's yards were gained through the air. “We lost to a quality football team tonight,” Hinsdale South coach Mike Barry said.  The Hornets finished the 2012 season with a 6-4 record.  For the full Sun-Times recap, click here.

Man Charged With Murder of Hinsdale South Grad Pleads Not Guilty

Juan Cuellar was in court this week, where he pleaded not guilty to all five counts related to the September murder of Joshua Holmes in unincorporated Willowbrook.

A Willowbrook man charged in the shooting death of a Hinsdale South High School graduate has pleaded not guilty. Juan Cuellar denied a five-count murder indictment during an Oct. 22 hearing. He remains held without bond in DuPage County Jail. Football Playoffs: Hinsdale South to Face No. 1 Seed Oak Forest in First Round

The high-scoring Bengals finished the regular season 8-1 and had seven wins by 21 points or more.

Hinsdale South will travel to Oak Forest this weekend as a No. 8 seed for a first-round 6A playoff game against the No. 1 seed Bengals, according to the IHSA football playoff brackets released over the weekend. The particular day and time for the game has not yet been set. Oak Forest finished with an 8-1 overall record in 2012, and a 5-1 record in the South Suburban Blue. The Bengals averaged nearly 40 points per game, and seven of their eight wins were by 21 points or more.  Lemont, who won the conference, was the only team to beat Oak Forest. Girls Tennis: Hinsdale South Doubles Team Has Perfect First Day at State

Day 1 of the IHSA state tournament is in the books, and Hinsdale South's only qualifiers are 3-0.

The Hinsdale South doubles team of Emma Adcock and Andrea Wakim won all three of its matches Thursday during Day 1 of the IHSA girls tennis state tournament.  The pair of seniors opened with a 6-2, 6-1 first-round win against Providence Catholic's Jamie Noonan and Marybeth Galick before they beat Taylor Stevenson and Jenny Lange of Triad, 6-2-, 6-3, in the second round, and Savannah Martin and Rebecca McIsaac of Belleville East, 6-4, 6-2, in the third round. Adcock and Wakim, the only Hornets to qualify for state, will take on Glenbrook North's Anna Zelechonok and Katrine Zhadovich in the fourth round Friday at Buffalo Grove High School.
