Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North high schools will play for town bragging rights Friday night as they hit the field for their annual gridiron showdown. The Trojans (3-1, 1-1) will host the Mustangs (1-3, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. at Carstens Field, 4436 Main St. Through High School Cube, we are able to bring you a live stream of the game. The Mustangs look to bounce back Friday after losing to 48-35 to South Elgin in the 2012 season opener.
Downers Grove South will look to bounce back from last week's disappointing season opener as it takes on Lyons Township on Friday. The Mustangs (0-1) will host the Lions (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. at South High School, 1436 Norfolk St. Last week, Downers Grove lost 48-35 to South Elgin, while Lyons fell 35-28 to Stevenson. Downers Grove North will head to Morton on Friday night for Game 2 of the 2012 football season. Last week, the Trojans (1-0) beat Lockport 27-7, giving the Porter their first season-opener loss since 2002. Morton (1-0) also picked up their first victory of the season last week, defeating the Chicago Perspectives team 34-6. Downers Grove will look to repeat its success from last year, when it beat the Mustangs 49-0. Friday's game will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Morton's football stadium, located at 2400 Home Ave. in Berwyn. The following was submitted by Peter Freischlag: Anyway you define it, the Downers Grove South Mustang Boys Varsity tennis Team (21-3, 7-0) lived perfection over the two-day IHSA Sectional Tournament at York High School this past weekend. After dominating their conference tournament last weekend, they scored a perfect 36 points for the first time in school history. In fact, the Mustangs scored enough points on Friday night put the title on ice. Then on Saturday, the Mustangs made it official as they won their fourth straight IHSA Sectional Title while qualifying all six players for the State Meet for the fourth consecutive year. Perfection! The following was submitted by Doug Plunkett: The Downers Grove South Girls Track & Field team competed at the IHSA State Meet this weekend finishing in a tie for 45th place overall, scoring a total of 5 points. Edwardsville won the championship with 51 points. Rebecca Stearns (Sr) earned All-State honors with her 5th place finish in the 800m run (2:12.81). Stearns set a school record in the prelims (2:11.80), breaking the 1990 record of 2:14.77 set by former 800m state champion Tina Stec. Rebecca ran an aggressive race in the finals holding on to 3rd place for much of the race until be being passed by two runners just before the finish line.
