The Best Book Club Ever? Area Libraries Offer Big Read Program Again

Ten area libraries will offer the Big Read program, which encourages patrons to read the same book with the goal of promoting reading, sparking discussion and building community.

You know how the typical book club works: A group of people read the same book, then meet to discuss it.  But not too many take the premise of a book club and make it a months-long community experience that includes learning about not only the literature but also relevant and related movies, food, geography, music and more.  The Big Read, a program put on by 10 area libraries, is once again making that happen with the goal of promoting reading, sparking discussion, and building community.  The Shoemaker's Wife, this year's book, tells the story of two lovers whose journeys take them from the mountains in Italy to their new home in America. Inspired by her own family history, author Adriana Trigiani's novel tells a love story that also …

Go Inside Darien’s History at Indian Prairie Library Oct. 21

The authors of the book, from the Darien Historical Society, chronicled Darien's history from the 1830s to its incorporation in 1969.

The Indian Prairie Public Library in Darien will host “Inside Darien’s History” on Sunday, October 21 at 2 p.m. featuring the authors of the newly published book Darien, Part of the Images of America Series. Darien Historical Society (DHS) directors Dean Rodkin, Deborah Coulman, and Debra Kieras along with DHS member Mary Krekelberg authored the book, which celebrates and chronicles the rich history of Darien from the 1830s to its incorporation in 1969. The presentation will include the history of Cass and Lace from which Darien evolved, “Life at the Point” and the surrounding farms, the schools that started the districts 61, 66, 63 and 180, and renowned residents U.S. Representative Martin B. Indian Prairie Public Library Hosts 'Singing in the Stacks'

The event, which includes singing, dancing and karaoke will be held at the library in Darien on Nov. 3.

On Saturday, November 3, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Indian Prairie Public Library in Darien will be hosting the IPPL Foundation’s fundraising event “Singing’ in the Stacks,” which will include music, dancing, food, drinks, and karaoke. The band Bandaroke will be the stars of the show with their energetic mix of rock, azz, blues, country, pop, and oldies.  There will be snacks and a cash bar, so attendees must be 21.  Tickets for the event are $15 before October 20 and will be $20 after that date, and at the door. People can purchase tickets at the library checkout desk at  during regular library hours. The Indian Prairie Public Library at 401 Plainfield Road in Darien will host The Neverly Brothers at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place outdoors, right outside the library’s entrance.   “This is the third appearance of The Neverly Brothers at the library,” said Laura Birmingham, assistant director. “Our community loves this band. PSAT Practice at Library Friday

Mock test will help students in grades 10-12 identify their test-taking strengths, weaknesses before taking the real thing in the fall.

The Indian Prairie Public Library at 401 Plainfield Road in Darien invites teens in grades 10-12 to participate in a free, proctored practice Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3. The practice test is designed to help students identify their test-taking strengths and weaknesses before “the real thing” during the school year. Each student who takes the mock test will be contacted about his or her analyzed test results. Students should bring sharpened #2 pencils and an approved calculator for the test on Friday. Confetti Dance Band at Indian Prairie Library Wednesday

Pack a picnic dinner, grab a lawn chair and enjoy a free outdoor concert.

The Indian Prairie Public Library at 401 Plainfield Road in Darien will play host to the dance band, “Confetti” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 11.  The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place outdoors, right outside the library’s entrance.  “This dance band is going to make everyone want to get up and dance,” said Laura Birmingham, assistant director of the library.  “Confetti is the perfect choice for an outdoor, summer concert.  They specialize in the kind of music that energizes the crowd – so call your friends, grab your chairs and a picnic dinner and join us for a great evening.” The six-piece band performs everything from ’40s Swing and classic rock and roll to Disco, Motown and popular Top-40 dance hits.  Their …

“The Making of Downton Abbey: Setting the Scene”

Lecture at Indian Prairie Library Thursday highlights facts behind popular PBS TV series

The Indian Prairie Public Library at 401 Plainfield Road in Darien will present a free lecture,  “The Making of Downton Abbey: Setting the Scene,” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 28. Landscape historian Barbara Geiger will present a slide lecture highlighting the facts behind the aristocratic life featured in the popular PBS television series, “Downton Abbey.”  Geiger, who specializes in late 19th and early 20th century places, teaches at the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
