The Darien Lions Club is out for blood—but not in a Twilight or Vampire Diaries sort of way. The club will hold its annual blood drive next Tuesday at Lace Elementary School between 4:30 and 8 p.m. For roughly 30 years, the club has sponsored the drive, which it now conducts in conjunction with local blood bank LifeSource, said this year’s event chair Rick Biehl. In recent years, the club said it has collected roughly 50 pints of blood during the drive. “It’s another way to help the community and give back to it for all it gives to us,” Biel said. Students learn how to be good members of the community through their annual fall blood drive.
Only five percent of eligible donors actually donate blood in the United States, according to the Mayo Clinic. On Tuesday, 98 students at Hinsdale South High School chose to be part of that five percent at the Student Council's annual fall blood drive. "It medically helps people in our community," said Julia Weigel, a senior student council coordinator for the event. "It's not like the blood goes to Africa. It literally helps blood banks close to us." In 2001, Hinsdale South's Student Council joined forces with LifeSource, the largest blood center in Illinois, to run a blood drive in response to Sept. 11.
