City offers free brush pickup for residents Aug. 27 through 31.
Whether residents are trimming trees, snipping shrubs or pruning privets, they need a way to dispose of the piles of brush that result from all that activity. The City of Darien offers free brush pickup several times during the year for all residents who live within the city limits – and the next scheduled dates are Aug. 27 through 31. At Monday’s city council meeting, Municipal Services Director Dan Gombac urged residents to wait until the weekend before the scheduled pickup week before placing brush out at the curb. “Keep it on the property until the pickup week,” Gombac said. He added that violation notices could be handed out to residents who place brush on or too close to the street before that time. According to the city’s website, …

Homeowners can expect to see crews on these streets this week.
Another spring week, another slate of streets up for resurfacing in Darien. Repaving is a four-part process, according to the city of Darien website. First, workers will grind off the top two to three inches of the road. They will then apply an asphalt product to level the surface. Once the surface is even, they’ll spread a crack control treatment that makes the pavement last longer. Finally, they will apply a bituminous topcoat. The following streets are up for repairs this week:

Three more beetles have been found in Darien since the city discovered the first in spring 2011.
Four beetles are causing quite the stir in Darien. But these aren’t the lads from Liverpool. They’re emerald ash borers, the insidious bug that carves its way into ash trees, essentially starving them as they eat through the channels that carry nutrients from root to leaf. The city found the first-known emerald ash borer in Darien in spring 2011. Since then, the city has identified three more infected trees—one on Grant and two on Farmingdale Drive, Municipal Services Director Dan Gombac said at a committee meeting last Monday. Rather than wait for beetlemania to sweep through town, he said the city is taking several measures to try to slow the borers’ spread. Ash trees account for roughly 29 percent of the parkway trees in Darien, Gombac …

While some council members said a smaller staff would save money, others argued the savings would be found by keeping work in-house.
Darien’s Municipal Services Department will maintain its staffing levels after the Administrative/Finance Committee of the Whole voted Tuesday to keep salaries for 14.5 employees in the 2013 budget. At the city’s first meeting about the 2013 budget on Feb. 22, Ward 3 Alderman Poteraske proposed eliminating a Public Works position. The department has been functioning with one fewer employee since a city mechanic retired in June. While the department plans to fill the mechanic position, Poteraske wondered if a general Public Works position could be done away with instead. Such a position runs the city about $75,000-$80,000, including benefits, Assistant City Administrator Scott Coren said. Municipal Services Director Dan Gombac presented a …

The city first discussed continuing to function with one fewer Municipal Services employee at last week's budget meeting.
After listening to an impassioned speech from Municipal Services Director Dan Gombac, the Municipal Services Committee agreed Monday to recommend the city of Darien maintain its current number of Public Works positions. At last week’s budget meeting, the Administrative/Finance Committee of the Whole discussed eliminating a position since Municipal Services has gotten by with a smaller staff for the past eight months. The department has functioned with one fewer employee since the city’s mechanic retired in June. A general Public Works employee has filled in for the mechanic on an interim basis. City Council voted two weeks ago to continue employing its own mechanic rather than sending vehicle repairs to Downers Grove’s service shop. The …

The Municipal Services Department has functioned with one fewer employee since June. Ward 3 Alderman asked Wednesday what would be the impact if that staffing level were made permanent.
The city decided just two-and-a-half weeks ago to retain an in-house mechanic, but talk at Wednesday’s budget meeting again turned to whether Municipal Services could function with one fewer employee. Ward 3 Alderman John Poteraske posed the question: Once the city fills the vacant mechanic job, does Darien need to staff Public Works at its previous levels? Municipal Services has been down an employee since the city mechanic retired in June. Public Works employee Tom Masek, who assisted the previous mechanic, has been filling his shoes full time in the intervening months. “Maybe we could look at instead of outsourcing the big stuff, we outsource the little stuff,” Treasurer Michael Coren said about vehicle repairs. “The (mechanic) we have…
