Darien Days: Find Deals and Support Local Business

Darien Days began over the weekend and will run through Sunday, Dec. 2, concluding with a holiday expo and tree-lighting.

Small Business Saturday passed last week, but supporting local businesses is something you can do all year. Darien Days, organized by the Darien Chamber of Commerce, puts a special emphasis on local businesses by getting the community involved directly with the business owners.  The event officially started Nov. 25 and will run through Sunday, Dec. 2, concluding with a business expo and tree-lighting. Throughout the week, keep your eyes out for special deals from local businesses. Here's a couple deals:  The holiday expo is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Lace School in Darien, with the Darien Historical Society's annual tree-lighting ceremony beginning at 4 p.m.  Santa will make an appearance at the expo, and there will also be …

Oakridge Hobbies and Toys is More Than Just Child’s Play

Retailer caters to the inner child in the young and old.

When Chris Robb describes the family business as “walking into Santa’s workshop,” he’s not kidding. Customers who first enter Oakridge Hobbies and Toys are greeted with myriad bright colors from floor to ceiling, life-size animals and toy soldiers intermingled with hundreds of toys and hobby items. And that’s just within the first 30 seconds of the visit. Since April, owners Sue and Terry Robb, son Chris and their friendly staff have been arranging and re-arranging their new 11,000-square-foot retail space to give it appeal reminiscent of FAO Schwartz. The move from Downers Grove to the Darien location at 75th and Lemont next to Joanne Fabrics was the third expansion since the business opened in 1987. “We like this area,” Chris Robb said…
