U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam responds to President Obama's remarks on the sequester.
U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) responded to President Obama's remarks on his sequester with the following statement Tuesday: “Today, the void of presidential leadership was on full display. Instead of getting in a room with Senate Democrats and passing a sequester replacement plan, President Obama chose to get behind a podium and give yet another speech. Noticeably absent from his speech was the fact that House Republicans have already passed two alternatives to the sequester his White House proposed in the last round of budget negotiations. “Everyone agrees that the sequester is not an artful way to achieve the spending cuts that our bloated federal budget desperately needs. But the president gets it wrong when he demands that Americans …

Peter Roskam talks about President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address on CNBC.
U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) said he doesn't expect to see President Barack Obama embrace bipartisanship in his State of the Union address Tuesday night, according to CNBC. He said he'd like to be surprised with some bipartisanship from Obama, but thinks the speech will be his "Inauguration Speech 2.0." The following message is from Peter Roskam's office: The President’s Illinois Worldview Isn’t Growing the Economy “You take Illinois spending patterns and extrapolate that onto the U.S. economy and that’s where the president is proposing to lead us—to about $26 trillion in debt. I don’t think we’re going to hear a lot about how the president can grow the economy through the private sector and why unemployment is still at a nagging 7.9 …

Please note in subject lines the message is a Letter to the Editor. ------------ Congress: Job Half Done? While it was good to see some solution to the 'fiscal cliff' situation from Congress, does anyone really question that Congress has only completed half of the task before them? The Obama Administration calls for a 'balanced approach' but only really desired to address increased revenues. We all know that revenues alone will not solve the problem. I agree with my Congressman, Peter Roskam of the 6th District, when he calls for curbing 'out of control' …

Patch contacted 10 newly elected representatives to find out what they plan to do to help curb gun violence in our country in the wake of last week's mass killing in Newtown, CT. Those who actually wanted to discuss the issue say it's time for a change.
When members of the 113th Congress take their seats in January, one of the top items on their agenda very well could be a new look at federal gun control laws. In the wake of the Newtown, CT, tragedy of one week ago today, President Obama on Wednesday set a January deadline for his administration to "create concrete proposals" to curb gun violence in the United States. Obama also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 to "pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips" and to "close a gun show loophole that allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check." What will come of this renewed debate is yet to be seen, but what is certain is that …

U.S. Rep Peter Roskam (IL-06) talks about avoiding the fiscal cliff on CNBC.
U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (IL-06) Friday appeared on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" to discuss how to avoid the "fiscal cliff" in 2013. He said House Republicans want to cut spending and avert the cliff, and that the House has already acted on the issues by arguing to extend current rates for a year as a bridge to tax reform, according to a press release. Starting Jan. 2, about $600 billion in tax increases and spending reductions would begin if Congress does not agree on how to implement less extreme measures, according to CNBC. Payroll taxes would increase to 6.2 percent from 4.2 percent, dividends would be taxed as income and estates worth more than $1 million would be taxed at 55 percent, according to a Reuters report. Roskam said the …

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam says the fiscal cliff can be avoided, and thinks there is an opportunity to bring Republicans and Democrats together to work on tax reform.
U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (IL-06) appeared on CNBC's Kudlow Report Thursday to discuss the fiscal cliff and the House push for tax reform. He said there is a "tremendous opportunity" to avoid the fiscal cliff because of House Speaker John Boehner's comments Wednesday on a willingness to discuss more revenues. "The House has already acted on one proposal that says move forward and extend the current tax rates for one more year, and use that as a bridge to tax reform," he said. "Before there were voices on the Democratic side that were saying, 'Well let’s just go over the fiscal cliff.' Well that’s a bucket of crazy. Nobody wants to go over the fiscal cliff, it’s ridiculous." Roskam said he predicts President Barack Obama will extend tax …

"Our tax code is a disaster, and most Americans recognize that it’s a disaster," he said Tuesday at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton. "And most Americans are very open to trying to reform the code." He said the House will begin to put together a "very substantive" tax reform effort focused on making the U.S. tax code the most competitive in the world. "If we do that we’ll be in a much better footing …
