When members of the 113th Congress take their seats in January, one of the top items on their agenda very well could be a new look at federal gun control laws. In the wake of the Newtown, CT, tragedy of one week ago today, President Obama on Wednesday set a January deadline for his administration to "create concrete proposals" to curb gun violence in the United States. Obama also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 to "pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips" and to "close a gun show loophole that allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check." U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (IL-06) Friday appeared on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" to discuss how to avoid the "fiscal cliff" in 2013. He said House Republicans want to cut spending and avert the cliff, and that the House has already acted on the issues by arguing to extend current rates for a year as a bridge to tax reform, according to a press release. Starting Jan. 2, about $600 billion in tax increases and spending reductions would begin if Congress does not agree on how to implement less extreme measures, according to CNBC. Peter Roskam (R-IL) won re-election in Illinois' 6th Congressional District Tuesday over Leslie Coolidge after getting 30,864 more votes than the his challenger, with all precincts reporting. Roskam said he plans to be a part of turning the economy around, and his work on the House Ways and Means Committee will be a platform to do so. Peter Roskam (R-Wheaton) on Friday notified the League of Women Voters (LWV) of the Palatine Area he will not be able to attend an Oct. 11 candidate forum in Palatine because of a previous commitment. Patch has partnered with the League of Women Voters of the Palatine Area to invite candidates in the Illinois 6th Congressional District race to a candidate forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Palatine Village Hall. The invitation is the group's second attempt to host such a debate, after Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Wheaton) was unable to attend the Oct. 4 event.
