It's been just about six weeks since Robert and Charleen Vuillaume were named Darien's 2012 Citizens of the Year, but the couple is still astonished at the outpouring of admiration they've gotten from the community. "From when first heard about the award, we were nonbelieving, shocked, surprised, very humbled and somewhat embarrassed," Robert said with a smile at Monday's City Council Meeting. The Vuillaume's modesty, however, is just one aspect of why the Darien Citizens of the Year committee chose to recognize the couple. Through The Gift of Carl Foundation, Robert and Charleen Vuillaume have helped hundreds of children and teens succeed in music, theater and the arts, while also supporting environmental education.
The good deeds happen quietly: piano lessons for a student here, a musical instrument for a student there. Darien is more subtly beautiful each year for the pockets of trees planted in its parks, three or four at a time, in memory of loved ones lost. Young adults with disabilities experience the thrill of taking the stage with the aid of a grant to the La Grange Actors with Special Needs Theater Group.
