Grab a Free Slice of Pizza at Jet's on Jan. 26

To celebrate a slew of new store openings, Jet's Pizza is giving away free slices and T-shirts later this month.

To celebrate a big 2012 in which it doubled the number of stores it has, Jet's Pizza is giving away free slices later this month.  On Saturday, Jan. 26, Jet's will give away one free slice of its signature deep dish pizza to each customer between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. That deal is good at Jet's 12 Chicago area stores, including the one here in Darien.  In Darien, Jet's is at 2425 W. 75th St. The first 50 people at each Jet's store will also receive a free Jet's T-shirt.  Jet’s doubled its Illinois presence in 2012 with seven new store openings (Arlington Heights, Champaign, Chicago, Joliet, Libertyville, Lombard and Wheaton), bringing the total number of Jet’s Pizzas in the state to 13. Obama's 'You Didn't Build That' Business Comments: Is He Wrong?

The president's small-business comments upset many people and gave Republican Mitt Romney a point of attack. But Barack Obama said the comments were taken out of context. What do you think? Take the Patch Poll.

President Barack Obama's recent comments about small business created a firestorm that could become a focus of the 2012 election — even as Obama and his supporters say his comments were taken out of context.  "Look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own," he said during a July 13 speech in Virginia. "If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help ... If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." Take the Patch poll below: Who plays the most significant role in creating jobs and economic growth? That's not the entire speech, which you can read on the independent FactCheck.org. According to that post, the comments were taken out of context: "There’s no question …

Local Business Woman Begins a New Fairytale (PHOTOS)

Former Darien Chamber of Commerce President Erika Zimmerman celebrated the grand opening of her store, The Cottage, Tuesday.

Stepping into The Cottage is like stepping into a fairytale—which is just the way owner Erika Zimmerman wants it. "(I want people to be) comfortable, happy and finding their own personal joy," she said. It was only fitting then that Zimmerman celebrated the grand opening Tuesday amid fairy princesses, ballerinas and a feast fit for a queen. Zimmerman has owned the small, yellow building next to Celestine Salon & Spa for 34 years. After her tenant Ellie Gibbler abruptly closed this winter, Zimmerman decided the time was right to open her own store. "The inspiration was always there," she said. The Cottage features an eclectic selection of jewelry, scarves, vintage knick-knacks and home decor. "She has excellent taste," said Darien Chamber …

Local Businesses, Let's Harness Social Media

Darien Patch has an idea!

Small businesses are important. Some say they are the backbone of our economy. And they don't particularly need to be that small on Facebook:  has 578 fans on Facebook. Q Billiards has 727. Carriage Greens Country Club has 2,045.  Some local businesses have fewer, though. So, we're proposing a special Facebook exchange. We'll post about you, if you post about us. Then, other local businesses can "share" that post from the Darien Patch Facebook page on their own pages to help support other local businesses. If you are a Darien-area business with an independent Facebook page and you'd like to participate, this is what I need from you: Keep in mind that you'll want your business name somewhere in the post so I can tag it; tagging is how …
