Snow Expected to Hamper Friday Commute

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory through 6 p.m. Friday.

After another dry spell, wintry weather is back in Darien. A winter weather advisory is in effect for DuPage County until 6 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service said. Expect flurries to turn into heavier snow this afternoon, with accumulations of 1-3 inches possible by early evening. Take it easy on your afternoon commute as the timing of the storm could make driving hazardous. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph combined with the snow could further decrease visibility. 1-2 Inches of Snow Expected Friday Night

Most the snow will fall before midnight, the National Weather Service reports.

The sun may be shining now, but more snow is on the way. The National Weather Service said the Darien area could get one to two inches of snow accumulating before midnight Friday. Dig out the shovels because there's a 90 percent chance this prediction will become a reality. Expect a low of 26 degrees overnight. The snow won't linger too long, as temperatures will likely rise to the upper 30s by Monday, NWS reports. On Tuesday it will be a veritable heat wave, with highs around 46 degrees.

Two Cars Collide, Slide Off Plainfield Road

One of the cars skidded into two other cars parked in driveways along the street.

Updated June 29 An eastbound SUV skidded while attempting to stop on Plainfield Road west of Route 83 Friday afternoon, striking a westbound car before sliding into two other cars parked in driveways along the street, Darien Police said. One driver appeared to have hurt his arm, but witness Mario Rodriguez said there didn't look to be any serious injuries. "Everything is fine," he said. Rodriguez was watching TV when he heard a loud noise. He called 911 after seeing that the vehicles had slid into both his and a neighbor's car. Tri-State Fire Protection District personnel had the accident cleared by about 2:15 p.m. The district was unable to be immediately reached for further information.

Winter Storm Expected to Peak during Friday Rush Hour

The second storm of the season is on its way, the National Weather Service predicts.

The good news: There should be plenty of snow for kids to play in this weekend.  The bad news: The worst of the storm is expected to hit during Friday’s rush hour.  A winter storm watch will be in effect for DuPage County from Friday morning through Friday evening, the National Weather Service said Thursday.  More than six inches of snow could fall in the Darien area throughout the course of the storm.  During the evening rush hour, snow could fall at a rate of one inch an hour, the report said. Such a constant snowfall would make it tough to keep roads clear.  The city of Darien prioritizes high-traffic streets when plowing. Once the main arteries are clear, the plows will address connector roads, followed by residential streets. It takes…

More Snow on the Way, Winter Reminders from the City

One to two inches of snow is on the way Tuesday, the National Weather Service reports.

Darien’s snowplows got their first big test of the season last Thursday.  Now forecasters predict that the next round, albeit a much milder one, will arrive Tuesday. Expect rain to turn to snow after 9 a.m. with temperatures falling throughout the day to around 23 degrees, the National Weather Service said. There could be some freezing rain as the drizzle transitions to snow, NWS reports.  While the odds of snow are at 90 percent, the NWS said the Darien area will accumulate only one to two inches. The city of Darien reminded residents in a release Friday that it prioritizes high-traffic streets when plowing. Once the main arteries are clear, the plows will address connector roads, followed by residential streets. It takes about four hours…

Minor Snow-Related Accidents Reported Around Darien

Darien police just finished responding to an accident at Plainfield and 75th Street, Officer Nick Skweres said.

The Darien Police Department has received reports of several minor accidents around the city today, most of which were related to the snow, Officer Nick Skweres said. Officers recently left the scene of an accident at Plainfield Road and 75th Street, he said. That incident happened around 3:45 p.m., according to Mapquest traffic reports. Reader Julie Johnston Stone told Patch via Facebook that she saw three accidents this morning while driving: a car jack-knifed across Lemont Road, a car in a ditch (also along Lemont Road) and a fender-bender on 75th Street. Skweres reminded residents to be careful on the roads: Drive slowly and make sure to leave plenty of room between your car and the one in front of you. Also, he cautioned that four-…
