Girls Swimming: Downers Grove North's Gabby Sims Wins State Title

Sims, a junior, broke a pool record in the 100-yard freestyle, leading the Trojans to a sixth-place finish at the IHSA swimming and diving finals.

Downers Grove North junior Gabby Sims won her second individual state title in dramatic fashion Saturday, breaking the pool record in the 100-yard freestyle at the IHSA girls swimming and diving finals in Evanston. Sims posted a pool-record 49.57 in the freestyle final—the second-fastest time ever swum at a state meet. She also became one of only four swimmers in Illinois history to break the 50-second mark at a state meet, according to mom Janice Sims. Gabby Sims finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (54:02), the event she won last year. Finishing first was Glenbrook South senior Olivia Smoliga (51.43), who also won the 50-yard freestyle (21.99). Going into Saturday's final, Sims was ranked first in the 100-yard freestyle and second …

This is a make or break game for DGN. If they win this game, I'd bet on a playoff run. If they lose, I'm not so sure. I'm predicting (as I did in my blog post) a Trojans victory.   more ›

Hinsdale South Girls Upend Downers North at Winter Classic

Trojans start out strong, but the Hornets finish strong to prevail, 57-49.

The Hinsdale South girls team’s 57-49 triumph over host Downers Grove North Saturday—a game that was part of the six-game Winter Classic held all day Saturday—can best be described as a tale of two halves. Behind a combined 15 points from Katie Hunzinger and Amelia Echemann, Downers North dominated most of the first half.
