World Trade Center Steel Set to Arrive in Darien Thursday

Ceremony set for 12:30 p.m. at Tri-State Fire Station Two, 419 Plainfield Road.

An eight-foot steel beam from the World Trade Center wreckage is on its way to Darien. A team from the Tri-State Fire Protection District picked up the beam Wednesday morning from Hangar 17 at JFK International Airport in New York City, Chief Michelle Gibson wrote via text message. The veterans' group Warrior Watch, as well as police from different states, will join Tri-State as they transport the beam from New York to its new home in Darien. On the way, they plan to make stops in Parsippany, NJ, Danville, PA, Harrisville, PA, Fremont, OH, South Bend, IN, and Tinley Park, IL. World Trade Center Beam Heading to Tri-State Fire Station Two

So it was a powerful moment when Gibson got the call this week that Tri-State would be receiving an 8-foot steel I-beam from the World Trade Center wreckage. “We wanted to bring it close to here so people can come and reflect and always remember,” she said. “Even if you didn’t know anyone in the World Trade Center, we’re still Americans, …

Darien Soldier Returns from Second Tour in Afghanistan

Students from District 61 greeted Maj. Marc Provenzano during a parade and assembly Monday.

Things have changed a little bit in the Provenzano house since Maj. Marc Provenzano left for Afghanistan in early February.  Five-year-old Gianna has become more articulate, as children do when they transition from preschool to kindergarten. Twins Luca and Vinny, 9, will be showcasing their theatrical chops by performing in Hinsdale South High School’s upcoming production of Guys and Dolls. And Tino, 13, now wears the same size shoes as his dad.  It was a long 10 months for the family while Provenzano served his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, but the welcome home he received Monday from Darien School District 61 couldn't have been any sweeter.  Area fire departments, the Darien Police Department and members of the Warriors' Watch …

PHOTOS: District 61 Welcomes Maj. Provenzano Home from Afghanistan

Children from District 61 schools celebrated the return of Maj. Marc Provenzano Monday from a nine-month tour in Afghanistan.

It was a long 10 months for the Provenzano family while Maj. Marc Provenzano served his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, but the welcome home he received Monday from District 61 couldn't have been any sweeter. Area fire departments, the Darien Police Department and members of the group Warrior Watch escorted Provenzano, his wife, Dena, and their four children in a parade that passed by Mark DeLay, Lace and Eisenhower Junior High schools. Children from the schools greeted the family with flags and handmade posters, chanting "USA! USA!" as the motorcade drove by. Provenzano returned home Friday from his post as commander of the U.S. Army 909th Forward Surgical Team in Afghanistan, a mobile unit that performs first-response trauma surgery…
