That's an interesting point. Essentially, however, what you're saying is many conservative-minded people don't care enough about the fate of the country to vote.

ReplyJoe Faber was village manager for 12 years. He was fired by his supporters one day before Heilmann, Olejniczak and Phelan took office in a move to preserve a payout of $180,000 that was written into the contract after Heilmann publicly said Faber probably would be fired by the new board, according to news reports from 2005. Faber drew an annual salary of $110,000. The new board tried to get a Cook County judge to void the contract, but he ruled against them in 2006.

Victor,
Oak Lawn Patch debuted in October 2010, two years and six months ago. Throughout that time, user submissions have been moderated in different ways. In the last 10 months, it's been an open platform. Patch isn't a newspaper, just as Ford doesn't make horse-drawn buggies. Still, if you apply your view to a newspaper, you'd have to object to the fact only a fraction of "letters to the editor" ever make their way into print. All online forums, even newspaper websites, have a form of comment moderation behind them. Some of them even include real people in the loop. This summer, we'll implement a new system that requires email address authentication. Usually, on the 900 other Patch sites in America, we don't have much problem taking down offensive, obscene, slanderous comments. In Oak Lawn, lately, the volume of such comments has been overwhelming. -

Comments on this article are now closed. Much appreciation to everyone who made interesting points on the flat tax vs. the progressive tax. And thank you, BUTCH, for sending the conversation down a path that ultimately led us to close the comments for everyone.

A lot of interesting points being made on this issue, on both sides. It is possible to trade points of view, however, without resorting to insults based on anyone's conservatism or liberalism and their brainpower or lack thereof.
Feel free to insult the government all you want.
(The reference to Foster Brooks made me laugh out loud, though.)

I believe the point they are trying to make, based on analysis of tax figures, is that those who earn more (in the millions) actually pay less proportionally in taxes than middle-income earners. After-tax income for the wealthiest in the country has risen almost 400 percent since 1980, while after-tax income for the middle class has risen about 40 percent in the same time frame. That's the rationale behind the so-called "Warren Buffet Rule," after he pointed out that his secretary surrenders a greater proportion of her income to the government than he does (even though he obviously pays the government a greater sum of money).

Hello. This post appeared throughout our Chicago-area network. The comments are coming from several towns, Mokena among them. I live in Frankfort Township, which includes Mokena, and can attest that it is a town of 18,800 that is very engaged on local issues, particularly politics. (The Mokena Food and Wine Fest is a lovely fall event. You all should come on down.)
